Amendments to AFSPA under CCS consideration, says Chidambaram | Union Home Minister P Chidambaram on Tuesday said that his ministry has proposed three amendments to the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA), which were under the consideration of the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS). "Ministry of Home Affairs has proposed
three amendments to AFSPA. They are under consideration of the Cabinet Committee
on Security. Once a decision is taken, we will announce it," he told the media
here. Chidambaram further said the report of the Central Government's interlocutors
on Kashmir would be made public after the Committee on Security (CCS) considers
it. "Interlocutors' report, As I said in Delhi , will be made public after the
Cabinet Committee on Security has considered the matter," he said. Chidambaram
had earlier said report of the interlocutors on Kashmir would 'see the light'
early in new financial year once a presentation is made before the Cabinet Committee
on Security. Chidambaram chaired a high-level meeting here today to review the
security situation in Jammu and Kashmir . Chidambaram, along with state Chief
Minister Omar Abdullah chaired the meet to take stock of the situation, deliberated
upon the inputs of intelligence agencies about infiltration movements in the state.
They also discussed the revocation of controversial the Armed Forces Special Powers
Act (AFSPA), to make public the interlocutors' report, the security for the annual
Amarnath pilgrimage scheduled to begin June 25 and state government's surrender
policy to bring back the misguided youths from Pakistan-administered Kashmir.
The Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFPSA) gives security forces sweeping powers
to shoot, arrest, search and detain people in battling the insurgency in Kashmir. Abdullah had
earlier said that there was need to withdraw the AFSPA in wake
of the decline in militancy in the province. Pak lawyer denied US visa after speaking against
