US-Afghan deal gives Kabul authority over night raids | The United States and Afghanistan have signed a landmark deal that gives Kabul effective control over night time raids, resolving one of the most contentious issues between the two countries. Under the agreement signed by the Afghan Defence Minister and
a US commander, US forces will play a supporting role in the raids. The deal would
also allow Afghan judges to review the operations and decide whether to hold detainees
after the raid, The BBC reports. The agreement comes ahead of the planned withdrawal
of NATO forces from Afghanistan in 2014. The night raids, currently carried out
by NATO and Afghan Special Forces, have been a growing cause of friction between
the Afghan government and the US military. The US military said that night raids
are a valuable way of finding and detaining suspected militants, but many Afghans
claimed the raids violate privacy and disrespect women.
