Congress MPs condemn logjam of winter session in Parliament | Speaker of the Lok Sabha Meira Kumar and Congress
Member of Parliament (MPs) on Monday condemned the logjam in the Parliament throughout the winter session. "It anguished me extremely; it affected me. I want this should
not happen again and the next session would progress smoothly as the hopes and
expectations of many people are dependent on the smooth functioning of the Parliament,"
said Kumar. Kumar further said the logjam would not spill over to the Budget Session
of the House. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) protested almost everyday leading
to adjournments within minutes of assembling of the House over their continuous
demands for setting up of a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) to probe into
the 2G scam. Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee said when the MPs would violate
the rules then there would be no cure for such problems. "It is very unfortunate
that in the entire sessions we could not conduct any business and it is more so
that MPs are to protect constitutional proprieties norms, rules, because they
are the creators of these norms. They are the creators of these rules," said Mukherjee.
"All the rules under the Parliament's function are the creation of the members
of the Parliament. If the creators themselves violate their own rules then where
is the remedy? This is very unfortunate," he added. Meanwhile, Union Minority
and Corporate Affairs Minister Salman Khursheed said the MPs should understand
that the continuous logjam is a serious matter of concern as Prime Minister Manmohan
Singh said. "I can only repeat what the Prime Minister has wished, hoped and said
that we find some solution to this logjam because it's obviously a major, major
problem for our democracy with a highest forum where we discuss matters on which
we agree or disagree, that forum is not functioning," said Khursheed. "I hope
the people will listen to the Prime Minister not as a member of a political party
but as someone who leads the whole country," he added. The Winter Session of Parliament
began on November 9 and has witnessed repeated adjournments over the opposition's
insistence for a JPC probe into the 2G scam, even after A. Raja resigned as Communications
and IT Minister.
