Supreme Court orders Allahabad HC to do some 'house cleaning' | The Supreme Court on Friday questioned the integrity of some of the judges of the Allahabad High Court, by saying that 'something rotten' was going on within that institution. A two-judge bench of the apex court, comprising Mr. Justices
Markandey Katju and Gyan Sudha Mishra, made this stinging and insinuating observation
in a 12-page order, and quoted the Bard of Avon, William Shakespeare, to boot,
to get their message across. The bench said that the high court "really needs
some house cleaning" and urged the chief justice of the high court to initiate
strong measures, including recommending "transfers of the incorrigibles". The
apex court warned that the 'uncle judge' syndrome, which refers to judges passing
favourable orders for parties represented by lawyers known to them, should end
at the high court. The bench made the observation while scrapping a single- judge
bench order of the Allahabad High Court which had asked a Bahraich-based Waqf
Board to temporarily allot a portion of its land in May-June this year to the
proprietors of a circus for its show during an annual fair. "The faith of the
common man in the country is shaken to the core by such shocking and outrageous
orders," said Mr. Justices Katju and Mishra.
