Noisy protests over 2G scam force Parliament to adjourn | Both Houses of Parliament were adjourned till tomorrow following noisy protests by Opposition members, who persisted with their demand for a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) probe into the 2G Spectrum scam. As soon as the Lok Sabha assembled, Opposition members trooped
into the well raising slogans for setting up a JPC to probe the alleged irregularities
in the scam. Speaker Meira Kumar's attempts to pacify the members bore no fruit
and she adjourned the House earlier till noon hardly a few minutes after it met
and later for the day. In the Rajya Sabha, opposition BJP and AIADMK members rushed
to the well the moment Deputy Chairman K Rahman Khan took up the listed business.
Khan told the members to go back to their places so that he could take up an obituary
reference to condole the death of over 65 persons in a building collapse in East
Delhi . But hell broke loose thereafter with BJP and AIADMK members rushing into
the well shouting, "We want JPC." Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was present in
the House during the commotion. Minutes into the pandemonium, Khan adjourned the
House till Friday. The 2G spectrum allocation has reportedly caused an alleged
loss of Rs1.76 lakh crores to the Government, the Comptroller and Auditor General
of India (CAG) has stated in a damning report. The report further states that
A. Raja had no apparent logical or valid reasons to ignore the advice of the Law
and Finance Ministries while allocating telecom spectrum to several firms in 2007-08.
