Surrey Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara Society ‘denounces’ shooting on its premise

The Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara Society in Surrey has strongly denounced a shooting in its parking lot on Saturday during a wedding. “This event or the individuals involved have no connection with this Gurdwara and the Gurdwara strongly condemns this and every act of violence,” The Globe and Mail quoted a press release by Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara Society, as saying. Police and ambulance rushed to the scene at Guru Nanak temple in Surrey after shots rang out early on Saturday afternoon during the marriage ceremony. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) called it a targeted shooting and say the suspect is known to them, though he wasn't immediately apprehended. Violence flared at the same temple in 1997. The disagreement was between members who wanted tables and chairs to be available in the temple dining hall, while others said it violated traditional Sikh values. However, the temple officials pointed out that Saturday's shooting is an isolated incident. “As far as we understand, it was a personal dispute that unfortunately found its way into the Gurdwara parking lot,” the Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara Society added.
