Sonia Gandhi to seek election again as Congress president | The election for the post of Congress president will be held on September 17. The Congress Working Committee (CWC), which met on Monday evening finalised the schedule for the election of the Congress president. As per the schedule, notification for the polls will be
issued on August 27. The last date for filing the nominations is September 2,
while scrutiny will be held on September 3. Sonia Gandhi is set to be elected
to the post for the fourth time in a row after taking over the reins of the Congress
party in 1998 in the wake of the party's poor performance in the Lok Sabha polls
that saw the exit of Sitaram Kesri from the post. Sonia Gandhi has created a record
of being the longest-serving Congress President and completed over a decade since she took over the top post. Her fourth term, though a foregone conclusion is significant in the context of history of the grand old party. |
