Kashmir under curfew for fourth consecutive day | The Kashmir Valley was under curfew for a fourth consecutive day Monday, after four youths were killed on Friday in clashes between protestors and the police. Curfew was imposed in Srinagar , Sopore and Bandipora to prevent
any violence at these places. Restrictions imposed in other towns like Baramulla,
Anantnag, Pulwama and Handwara would be reviewed during the day. The hardline
faction of the separatist Hurriyat group headed by Syed Ali Geelani called for
a valley-wide shutdown Monday as part of its Quit Kashmir campaign. Shops, educational
institutions and business establishments remained closed throughout the valley.
Public transport went off roads while a few private vehicles plied in areas where
restrictions were not strictly imposed. A curfew was initially imposed on June
30 in parts of northern and southern Kashmir to stop demonstrations over a couple
of protesters who died in police firing. It was lifted some days later, but was
again imposed as fresh violence erupted. The valley is witnessing a surge of violence
that has led the authorities to impose frequent curfew restrictions in several
parts of Kashmir. |
