Retreat ceremony, a major draw at Wagah on 64th Independence Day | On the occasion of 64th Independence Day celebrations, thousands of people from different parts of the country today converged at Wagah to watch the Retreat Ceremony.
Enthusiastic youngsters, holding the tricolour in their hands, took several rounds
of a small stretch of road up till the international border gates. The sight added
to the joy and enthusiasm of other thousands of spectators present here on the
occasion. “This was my heartiest desire to exhibit my patriotic feelings and doing
the same before all the participants was like a dream coming true,” said Harbhajan
Lal, one of the spectators. Rahul Kohli of Chandigarh , who came here for this
special function, said: “It was a proud moment for any Indian to watch their jawans
performing drill at the border.” Another visitor Komal wished that efforts should
be made to establish peace between India and Pakistan . The evening flag-lowering
ceremony at the India-Pakistan International Border near Wagah is a major draw
for all. By evening, the Wagah was illuminated with decorative lights on both
sides, as yesterday was the Pakistan ’s Independence Day. The Wagah border is
a ceremonial border on the India–Pakistan Border where each evening there is a
retreat ceremony called 'lowering of the flags', which has been held since 1959.
Wagah is the only road border crossing between India and Pakistan. |
