Bhopal gas tragedy: More money for victims, clean-up by state Govt | The reconstituted Group of Ministers (GoM) headed by
Home Minister P Chidambaram on Bhopal gas tragedy on Monday concluded its meeting after finalising recommendations for Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's review. According to sources, the ministers have decided that Rs ten lakh will be given to those
who lost their lives in the disaster. The have also reached a consensus that the
Madhya Pradesh Government will undertake the exercise of clean up with support
from the Centre. The Central Government will bankroll the clean-up for now, but
will ask in court for Dow Chemicals, which bought Carbide in 2001, to be held
financially liable. The government will also begin a new initiative for the extradition
of former Union Carbide chief Warren Anderson. The nine-member panel will now
submit its report to the Prime Minister. The report will also include recommendations
on legal options such as a curative petition in the Supreme Court pinning criminal
and legal liability on the accused. The GoM is also likely to recommend that the
Union Carbide plant be dismantled and a memorial park be set up in its place.
