Curry restaurant owner assassinated in Sheffield | A curry restaurant owner in Sheffield, London, has been shot dead at the wheel of his car in what is believed to have been a planned assassination. Safrajur Rahman
Jahingir, 23, is believed to have been the victim of a feud within Sheffield's
small Bangladeshi community. According to investigators, his murder is in no way
connected to the bloody rivalry between city's "postcode gangs". Jahingir, who
lived in the Darnall area of Sheffield, had last year been beaten up and severely
injured in an attack outside the business he owns jointly with his brother, and
a number of people were jailed for that. He was shot dead at about 10.45pm on
August 28, as he was driving a silver Vauxhall Corsa along Scraith Wood Drive,
and is believed to have been shot from close range through the car window. He
may have tried to drive away from his attacker, but as he slumped over the steering
wheel, the car went out of control, crossing another road and almost colliding
with a bus before crashing into bushes. The driver of the bus tried to help the
dying man and was joined by a paramedic, but Jahingir's wounds proved fatal. A
post-mortem examination revealed that he had suffered two bullet wounds to the
body, which police believe were fired from a handgun. South Yorkshire Police appealed
for sightings of a red Seat Leon hatchback car that was seen leaving the scene
seconds after the shooting. Detective Superintendent Peter McGuinness, who is
leading the murder hunt, said that members of the public had no reason to fear
for their safety. "We believe this was a targeted attack and not gang-related,"
Times Online quoted him as saying. "At this stage we are keeping an open mind
about the motive. "Officers are conducting house-to-house inquiries and examining
CCTV footage and we already have some good lines of inquiry we are following up,"
he added. Three men, aged 28, 33 and 36, have been arrested in connection with
the shooting and are being interviewed. They are believed to come from the Bangladeshi
community.
