Seven women detained for running illicit liquor business in Ahmedabad | The police detained at least seven women for selling illicit liquor known as hooch in local parlance that recently claimed three lives in Gujarat. Two breathed their last on Friday while one more person died on Saturday after consuming drinks laced
with a chemical used in making perfumes. Acting on a tip off, crime branch officials
conducted raids in several areas in Ahmedabad and arrested seven women. Arrested
women will be produced in a local court today. As per media reports, Ahmedabad
police crime records reveal that maximum number of prohibition cases has been
registered against women. Reportedly, about 46 women were arrested for the sale
country liquor in the month of July. At least 132 people died of consuming illicit
liquor in Ahmedabad in July. Illicit liquor, also known as grog or hooch, is a
flourishing beverage in India, particularly in states like Gujarat where prohibition
is in force. Illicit liquor is much cheaper as compared to the licensed drinks,
which most of the people from the poorer sections of society cannot afford.
