UPA Govt determined to tackle Naxalism: Manmohan Singh | Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh said on Monday that naxalism is the biggest threat to the internal security of the country, and added that the UPA Government
is determined to tackle this threat. Speaking on the occasion of completion of
one year of the UPA Government in its second term, Dr. Singh said: "If you remember
I have been saying since last three years that naxalism is the biggest threat
to the internal security and it is not correct to say that the government has
not taken serious action to tackle this problem." "I have discussed the matter
many times with all the chief ministers and I believe that all CMs are of the
same view that of the center,' he added. Dr. Singh said in his opening remarks
to the media that the government is determined to tackle naxalism. "We are determined
to squarely tackle the threat of terrorism and ideological extremism of various
kinds. I have on earlier occasions outlined our approach to tackling Naxalism,"
he said. "We are working on systemic changes in our national security system,
paying due attention to the modernization and professional development of the
police and security forces, investigating agencies and the law and order machinery.
"Judicial reform and transparency in the functioning of the government will also
receive priority in our agenda," the Prime Minister added. Addressing key constraints
in the modernization of agriculture and in the expansion of infrastructure, which
requires long-term strategies backed by stepped up investment, he said: "We have
taken important steps in these areas, which will continue to receive the focused
attention of the government." |
