Tribal University in Manipur | The recent setting up of the Indira Gandhi National
Tribal University in Manipur has come as a major encouragement for tribal students
of the State to excel in academics. The long cherished dream of the tribals of
Manipur of having a separate higher study centre has been fulfilled with the inauguration
of the Regional Centre of the Indira Gandhi National Tribal University , (IGNTU).
At present, the temporary varsity is located at the Tribal Research Institute
(TRI), Adimjati in Imphal. The university will function from here till the completion
of its permanent campus at Makhan village under Kangpokpi sub-division of Senapati
district. The university would be the Regional Campus of Indira Gandhi National
Tribal University (IGNTU) Amarkantak, Madhya Pradesh , which was set up by a Parliament
Act in 2007. “It is a very good step for the tribal people and this will give
more benefit to the tribal student of Manipur,” said Pamei Tingenlung , President
of the President, Manipur University Tribal Students' Union “Even though we don’t
have an opportunity to go toin other universities, we still have a hope that we
will be able to continue our studies and will become successful persons in our
lives. Now, we have a scope for that,” said Huimila Ningshen , a student. This
year the university will start Master of Philosophy (M.Phil) course in political
science. After the completion of the permanent campus, all the regular academic
and professional or job-oriented courses will be offered. The university will
provide institutional and research facilities in tribal art, culture, tradition
language, medicinal system, customs and forest based economic activities, flora
and fauna and advancement in technologies relating to natural resources of tribal
areas. |
