School children fall ill after consuming iron pills in Amritsar | At least 30 teen-aged students developed nauseate feelings and fell sick after taking iron pills at Amritsar on Friday. This mishap took place at
the Government Senior Secondary School located near Hakima Gate area of the city.
Reportedly, these young students complained of acute pain in the stomach and a
few of them even vomited after taking the pills in the school. The school authorities
swung into action and the affected children were rushed to the Civil Hospital.
"We received a message over phone that children have fallen sick in a school at
Hakima Gate. We rushed two attendants and an ambulance there," said said Dr. Balwinder
Kumar Kakkar, Additional Senior Medical Officer, Civil Hospital, Amritsar. "There
we saw that some children were feeling nausea and some of them were vomiting.
These children were brought here and admitted to hospital," he added. He also
mentioned that an inquiry is being conducted to ascertain the cause of reaction
from the medicine that was administered to these under-teen students. Meanwhile,
authorities blamed the school administration for negligence and held it responsible
for the incident. According to them, the school did not store the pills as mentioned
in storage instructions. Although, the young students are said to be in stable
condition, the doctors at the hospital wish to keep them under observation for
a day or two before discharging them. The parents of affected students staged
a protest outside the school. |
