IPL Governing Council meets in Mumbai | The Indian Premier League ( IPL ) Governing Council on Sunday held its meeting here on Sunday. The meting was reportedly,
to discuss the fate of former IPL Commissioner Lalit Modi who was suspended from
the post. Modi was suspended following the allegations of financial irregularities
on April 25, soon after the final match of this year's edition of IPL . He has
been given 14 days to reply to the allegations levelled against him. Meanwhile,
Former Indian captains Ravi Shastri, Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi and Sunil Gavaskar
were also present at the meeting. The enormous popularity of the game in India
has made the Board of Cricket Control in India (BCCI) one of the richest sporting
bodies in the world and brought to its board politicians, businessmen and royalty.
The IPL helped revolutionise cricket with its short, television-friendly format,
combined with lucrative advertising and cheerleaders in packed arenas, but it
has upset many of the traditional followers of the game. The Governing Council
of IPL includes BCCI President Shashank Manohar, Vice-President Arun Jaitley,
Secretary N Srinivasan, Media and Finance Committee Chairman Rajeev Shukla and
IPL Vice Chairman Niranjan Shah. Tax authorities are probing the three-year-old
IPL , valued at an estimated 4.1 billion dollars, after Shashi Tharoor resigned
from the Union Council of Ministers after being accused of using his influence
in the formation of a newly franchised Kochi IPL team from Kerala. The scandal
sparked off tensions between the ruling Congress and the Nationalist Congress
Party (NCP), a key ally whose chief is seen close to Modi. |
