Over 1.5 lakh people affected as flood situation worsens in Assam

Over 1.5 lakh people have been affected as the flood situation in Assam worsened on Sunday with water level of Brahmaputra and its tributaries showing a rising trend. The Assam Government has asked all its deputy commissioners to be on high alert. Officials said that road communication to Arunachal Pradesh through Lakhimpur and Dhemaji has also been disrupted due to the flood. The flood-prone Dhemaji District was cut off from the rest of the country with the rising water of Jiadhol river. The rising water of Jiadhol river has breached two embankments and submerged parts of the National Highway number five. The situation remained critical in Lakhimpur District, with more than 50 villages affected and flood water inundating roads and bridges at many places. In Dibrugarh District, the Brahmaputra and its tributary Dihing, were flowing above the danger level and flooded over ten villages. Two boatmen were reportedly drowned in Tinsukia. Animals in the Dibru-Saikhowa National Park were forced to flee to highlands inside the forests, as floodwaters wrecked havoc.
