IT raids at IPL head office, Modi summoned | The Income Tax Department conducted raids at the Indian Premier League (IPL) office here on Thursday evening and also summoned its chief Lalit Modi to appear before it. The raids which continued till evening came in the backdrop
of controversy over thousands of crores of rupees involved in the IPL. Reportedly
the IT had sent summons to Modi, four times earlier. The IT officials are tightlipped
over the details of raids. The IPL headquarters are based at the offices of the
Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). These raids are being termed as
"income tax surveys" into the IPL's financial transactions. In March the Kochi
team was sold last month for 1530 crores to the Rendezvous World Sport. The group
gifted equity worth 70 crores to Sunanda Pushkar, who is a close associate of
Tharoor. The IPL Commissioner Lalit Modi went public on twitter with details of
her stake on Monday. Since then, the Kochi group has demanded that the IPL reveal
the stakeholders and their shares of the other IPL teams as well. Modi's own role
has come under attack given that his family members and close friends are reportedly
involved with at least three IPL teams. |
