Mob ransacks two Kolkata hospitals for denying treatment to accident victims

An angry mob of around 200 people ransacked at least two hospitals in Kolkata on Tuesday, accusing them of denying treatment to accident victims of a bus-trolley collision. The protestors were furious when the hospital authorities didn’t cooperate to ensure treatment to the wounded persons. Local residents had rushed to the Peerless Hospital to ensure treatment for the injured persons. Earlier, six people had died and nine others were declared as being in serious condition at the accident site. The incident occurred after a mini bus, they were traveling in, collided with a lorry head-on at Patuli in South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal. “At the hospital, the mob set afire furniture, medical equipment, including stretchers, and even manhandled hospital staffs, said a patient. "They beat up the doctors and nurses. They kicked the gate and broke the glasses. They broke the systems in the nearby room and set it afire. We are scared and our relatives are calling us to know about our well-being," said Amit Mukherjee, a patient. Police personnel fired gunshots in the air to disperse the mob. Some police officials were also injured in the violence. However, West Bengal Sunderban Affairs Development Minister Kanti Ganguly, who visited the spot to pacify the angry mob, described the situation as being under control. "The security condition is...now……it is under control. Police came and took the responsibility to restore the peace and at this moment, three seriously injured patients, sent them to MR hospital and the six died, the post mortem and other things, we are going to do it. At this moment, the peaceful situation is there," said Ganguly. The injured persons are undergoing treatment at the state-run M R Bangur Hospital.
