Another cabbie robbed at knifepoint in New Zealand | The knifepoint robbery of a female cabbie in the New Zealand city of Tauranga on Thursday has proved how unsafe the place has become for taxi-drivers. It was the third attack on a cabbie in Tauranga in
two weeks, Stuff.co.nz reports. A 19-year-old man, who allegedly threatened the
cabbie with a knife and robbed of cash and two wallets, will appear in court tomorrow.
She was driving the man from Mount Maunganui to the bottom of Seventeenth Ave
in Tauranga when the incident happened, the report says. The man fled on foot
and was tracked by a police dog to Fifteenth Ave motorway, it adds. Late last
month, two Tauranga taxi drivers were attacked and robbed in separate incidents.
One driver suffered serious face and head injuries, while the other was told he
would be shot if he told the police about the incident. A 20-year-old man and
a 22-year-old were arrested over the attacks. The New Zealand Government is considering
a proposal to make cameras compulsory in taxicabs following the killing of Auckland
taxi driver Hiren Mohini and other attacks. |
