Foreigners teach underprivileged children in Varanasi | | Foreign teachers have taken up the noble initiative of imparting social and environmental education to the underprivileged children at a school run by the Aghor foundation in Varanasi. Under the guidance
of Baba Harihar Ramji, founder of the Aghor Foundation, the Italian couple, Loknath
and Kamala has undertaken a humanitarian service of teaching slum children at
Anjali School in the city. "The children who attend this school usually come from
very poor backgrounds. So, we not only provide them education and special
education
but we also give them uniform, food, health care facilities, medicines if needed
and may other things," said Loknath. The foreigners not only impart elementary
education to students upto Class thee but Indian culture and heritage is given
special emphasis in the curriculum. The vision behind the school is to provide
holistic education to the children, at par with education given at any other good
school in the country. "Something that is not new is that the education here has
its deep roots in Indian culture. So, the children are followed by their teacher
in a path of knowledge about themselves through yoga, meditation and visualization.
There are special tools for learning English and Math also," said Kamala. There
are nearly 150 street children studying at the school. Modern tools and techniques
of education are used at this school and the students are given an insight into
the value systems of the east and the west. "Even foreign countries have many
good values and systems so people from these places come down here to teach the
best things about their culture here. And we are here to teach the Indian culture
which has changed over the period of time. But we emphasise on the original cultures
and traditions and impart that knowledge to the children. It is very important
that the students learn good facets of both the regions and it will not be possible
if these teachers don't come here from their countries," said Sanjay Tiwari, an
Indian teacher at the school. The foundation receives donations from both domestic
and foreign patrons for their various projects and successful functioning of the
school. |
