PPP faction seeks action against Zardari's advisers for judges' elevation controversy

While the tussle between the judiciary and the executive in Pakistan seems to have subsided with the government's decision to roll back its notification regarding elevation of judges, a group within the ruling Pakistan People's Party (PPP) have demanded action against people who were behind the whole controversy. According to reliable sources in the PPP, a large number of party leaders and the coalition partners have demanded action against those who had put the Government in embarrassing situation. Sources said that the issue has already been discussed with Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani, who has been urged to take up the matter to President Asif Ali Zardari. Insiders said people who advised Zardari to go ahead with the promotion of judges to the apex bench must be dealt with severely. A senior PPP leader, who spoke on conditions of anonymity, said there is a 'group of non-elected' advisers of the President who had put the party and the ruling alliance into awkward position. "Had these people shown the door after the Governor's Rule fiasco in Punjab the current crisis on judges' appointment and elevation could have been averted," The Nation quoted the leader, as saying.
