ND Tiwari resigns as Andhra Governor following sex scandal

Following a sex scandal aired by a TV channel, Andhra Pradesh Governor Narayan Dutt Tiwari is reported to have resigned from his post on Saturday stating health reasons. Tiwari is reported to have sent his resignation letter to President Pratinbha Patil. On Friday, Tiwari became centre of controversy after a regional channel broadcast some footage showing him in compromising positions with women. The major controversy made Congress party to face lot of embarrassment due to his long association with the party. The media report had alleged that a Delhi based person supplied some teenaged girls to Tiwari at the nstance of his aide. After the sting operation was telecast the Raj Bhavan approached the Andhra Pradesh High Court and got a restraint order on the channel from airing the footage. The Raj Bhavan termed the clipping as fabricated and a tissue of lies. However, the channel claimed that it has evidence to back what they have shown. Earlier in the day, the Central Government had asked for a report from the Andhra Pradesh Government. The Union Home Ministry asked State Chief Secretary, Ramakant Reddy, to send a detailed report about the allegations made against Tiwari. Addressing the media in New Delhi, the Congress spokesman, Shakeel Ahmed, said the High Court is looking into the matter. "Since the matter is sub-judice, no one should comment upon it,” Shakeel said. The local TV channel had telecast explicit clippings showing the veteran Congress leader with some women in a compromising position. The clips ran for about an hour before the Hyderabad High Court restrained the channel from airing the video. A women's help group protested outside the official residence of Tiwari over his alleged involvement in sex scandal. The activists from the women's group tried to break the police cordon but were stopped by riot police and whisked away. Leader of Opposition in Andhra Pradesh Assembly and Telugu Desam Party president N Chandrababu Naidu demanded immediate sacking of Tiwari. "The only way for him (Tiwari) is to resign or the Centre should sack him," Naidu said. "Unfortunately all standards are degenerating and today what they have shown it is very bad and also everybody should be ashamed of it. So what I demand immediately governor should resign or otherwise government of India should sack him. Even in this there are some reports that some MPs are also involved, there is a big scandal in it. The Centre should immediately order to CBI inquiry and those who are all culprits in this scandal should be punished very severely," said Naidu. Tiwari had previously served as the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand. This is not the first time Tiwari has figured in controversies involving women. Sometime back, a lawyer had filed a paternity suit in Delhi High Court against Tiwari claiming that he was born out of intimate relationship between the Governor and his (lawyer) mother. The charge was, however, denied by Tiwari.
