Doctor serves notice to Akram demanding 'unconditional apology'

A Pakistani doctor, Dr Kamran Cheema, has served a legal notice to former fast bowler Wasim Akram demanding an unconditional apology from him after being accused of showing negligence in the treatment of Wasims's wife, Huma Akram. Terming Wasim's allegations as 'baseless', Dr. Cheema's notice also asked Wasim to pay damages worth one hundred million rupees. "You are further required to pay damages to our client in the amount of 100,000,000 rupees (one hundred million). Should you fail to tender the apology, the amount of damages to be claimed by our client shall be 500,000,000 rupees. In such an event, our client would also proceed to file criminal charges for your entirely irresponsible conduct," the notice, which was served through a legal firm, stated. The notice said that Wasim had launched a media campaign to highlight the death of his wife, therefore accusing each and every doctor, who saw her at different hospitals, of negligence and malpractice. "All this has not only caused great loss of name and reputation to our client (as also other doctors), but needless distress and anxiety to our client as well," The Dawn quoted the notice, as saying. It also alleged that Wasim had used his influence to force an inquiry by the National Assembly's Standing Committee on Health by levelling inaccurate and unsubstantiated allegations against doctors. It may be noted that the NA committee had terminated the licenses of 17 doctors, who had treated Huma at different hospitals, on charges of dereliction of duty.
