West Bengal Governor urges GJM activists to call off fasting | Outgoing West Bengal Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi on Sunday urged the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) activists to discontinue their fasting protest. The GJM activists are undertaking a 96-hour long fasting to press for the creation
of Gorkhaland state. Gandhi on Sunday demitted the office of the West Bengal Governor
at the end of his five-year tenure. His tenure was marked by frequent confrontation
with the ruling Left Front on law and order issues, especially during the Nandigram
violence. Gopalkrishna, grandson of Mahatma Gandhi , while repeatedly criticizing
the Government remained within the constitutional limits of his office. His tenure
was to coincided with one of the most tumultuous phases that the state was to
witness in three decades of Left Front rule. |
