Eiffel Tower steps up for grabs! | A Paris auction will see some historic articles from the city, including 40 iron steps from the Eiffel Tower, a lamp post and park bench, going under the hammer. The auction titled, Paris Mon Amour,
will be held at the renowned French house Drouot. "I have been thinking for many
years about organizing an auction concerning Paris," the Telegraph quoted Christophe
Lucien, who put the sale of the 301 items together, as saying. The idea of an
auction was generated when authorities at Nogent-sur-Marne, east of the city,
asked Lucien to sell the part of Eiffel Tower staircase, bought by the town in
a 1983 auction. Lucien said: "I thought that was the perfect opportunity ... because
there is nothing more symbolic of Paris than a staircase from the Eiffel Tower.
"I just spread the word among my clients, and everybody started to pull out objects
related to Paris from their draws, cupboards ... In almost every French family
there are some souvenirs of Paris". Lucien says Gustave Eiffel had climbed the
painted iron stairs, which linked the third and fourth floors of the tower to
plant the French flag, when the monument was inaugurated in 1889. The stairs are
expected to fetch 73,500 dollars to 88.200dollars. The buyer would also bear the
cost of the steps' dismantling. A piece of glass broken during the 1987 construction
of the glass pyramid at Louvre Museum, along with a snap, is estimated to sell
for anything between 735dollars to 1,470dollars. |
