Obama says Mother Teresa, Mandela deserve Nobel Peace Prize more than him | US President Barack Obama has acknowledged that he does not belong in the same league as Nelson Mandela or Mother Teresa, ahead of his Nobel Peace Prize acceptance
speech on Thursday. White House spokesman Robert Gibbs mentioned that the leader
was completely aware of his status among other luminaries. "The President understands
and again will also recognize that he doesn't belong in the same discussion as
[Nelson] Mandela and Mother Teresa," The New York Daily News quoted Gibbs as saying.
He added: "But I think what the President is proud of is the steps that this administration
has taken to reengage the world...." "He is proud that the [Nobel] committee recognized
that this nation has once again reemerged and [is] engaging the world in greater
pursuits," Gibbs added. The rep said Obama would also speak about his step of
sending more troops to Afghanistan in his acceptance speech in Oslo. Gibbs said:
"The President will address the notion that last week he authorized a 30,000-person
increase in our commitment to Afghanistan, and this week accepts a prize for peace." |
