Kumble’s wish of India becoming No 1 Test team comes true | Former Indian skipper Anil Kumble’s wishes about the national side's supremacy over the touring Sri Lankans came true enabling India to hop to the top in the International Cricket Council (ICC) Test rankings. Team India secured
top spot in the Test rankings for the first time after handing Sri Lanka a second
successive innings defeat and wrapping up their three-match series 2-0 on Sunday.
Earlier on Saturday, Kumble had expressed hopes that India would outwit Sri Lanka
. “Hopefully, India will win this Test match very convincingly and go to be number
one Test team,” Kumble had said on Saturday while adding: “It is disappointing
having come that close, but knowing Veeru (Sehwag) he will aim higher and you
will see another triple hundred very soon, if not 400…great innings to get 284
runs in a day…very special innings that is the kind of player he is.” Resuming
on 274-6 and needing 60 runs to make India bat a second time, the Sri Lankan team
lost the hopes of drawing the match after skipper Kumara Sangakkara edged the
third ball to wicketkeeper Mahendra Dhoni. The 2-0 series victory saw India jump
from third in the rankings to displace South Africa at the top. Sri Lanka , which
is still looking for its first Test win on Indian soil, dropped from second place
to fourth in the rankings, behind Australia . Both the teams will now play two
Twenty20 internationals and five one-day internationals starting on Wednesday. |
