BJP organizes ‘mini marthon’ to highlight tardy preparations for 2010 C’Wealth Games | In a unique way to draw public attention to the lackluster approach of the Delhi Government towards preparation for the 2010 Commonwealth Games, the opposition party Bharatiya Janata Party on Sunday held a ‘mini marathon’ here. The objective was to highlight
the lack of preparedness for the Commonwealth Games to be held in October 2010.
Senior BJP leader Vijay Goel during the marathon alleged that the both the Central
and Delhi Governments are manipulating the funds and expenses of the Commonwealth
Games. "We organised this marathon to stop …. and draw attention to the wastage
of money in the Commonwealth Games. We feel that the organising authorities, Central
and State government are showing carelessness towards the preparations of the
games. They are wasting the funds allocated to them," said Vijay Goel. He added
that the Central government should concentrate on the pending infrastructure like
the building of new roads and stadia. Former Indian Test cricketer turned BJP
leader Chetan Chauhan alleged there is no cooperation between the Central and
the State governments as such the preparations are getting delayed. "Though the
preparations for the games have started but it is not up to the mark. There is
still lot of pending work, which needs to get completed on time like the stadia,
roads and the games village are still not built yet. There is no cooperation between
the authorities and the different organising committees and the State and the
Central government," said Chetan Chauhan during the ‘mini-marathon’. The 2010
Commonwealth Games will be India 's first major international sports event after
the 1982 Asian Games. New Delhi hosted the inaugural Asian Games in 1951 and again
in 1982. Delhi bagged the contract for commonwealth games after beating the Canadian
city Hamilton in the bid for rights to host the games. The Games are scheduled
to be staged in India for the first time and in Asia for the second time. |
