Volunteers scheme for 2010 Commonwealth Games launched | The 2010 Commonwealth Games (CWG) organising committee launched a volunteers' scheme for the prestigious event here on Friday. Launching the scheme, (CWG) Organising Committee Chairman
Suresh Kalmadi said regular training classes would begin for the volunteers shortly.
"The Commonwealth Games is the biggest event we are having in India so far. We
have Asian games years before, before many of you have born. So, you are going
to volunteer and participate in the Commonwealth Games, which is going to bring
honour to the country and bring honour to the city. So, you all are going to be
the spirit of the game. And from now onwards, you will have regular training classes,"
he said. Kalmadi also launched a website for the volunteers. "The Commonwealth
Games volunteers programme has been kicked off and I congratulate each one of
the volunteers who are going to be the backbone of the successful conduct of the
games. I wish them lot of fun and great luck. It has been a great opportunity
for them also to meet people from all across the world," said Olympic shooting
gold medallist Abhinav Bindra. The 2010 Commonwealth Games will be India's first
major international sports event after the 1982 Asian Games. Delhi bagged the
contract for commonwealth games after beating the Canadian city Hamilton in the
bid for rights to host the games. The Games will be staged in India for the first
time and in Asia for the second time. |
