Beckham fears Capelo will axe him from England World Cup squad | Football star David Beckham fears coach Fabio Capello could axe him from England's squad for the World Cup finals. The Three Lions will book their place in South
Africa with a win over Croatia at Wembley tomorrow. According to The Sun, Becks
faces a nervous wait to see if he makes boss Capello's final 23 and admits his
place at a fourth successive finals next summer is far from secure. "Of course
I want to be involved in every squad possible. But if I'm not selected, it's because
the manager believes he'd have a stronger squad and stronger players without me,"
the 34-year-old star said. "I would accept that. I'm an England fan and if I don't
end up being in a squad that goes to South Africa, that won't mean I don't support
the lads and want them to win," he added. Capello axed Beckham at Real Madrid
then brought him back and the Italian did it with England, too. Beckham was an
unused sub in the 2-1 friendly win over Slovenia on Saturday, the first time in
11 years he has not taken some part in the game when selected for the squad and
is fit. He faces competition on the right side of England's midfield from three
speedsters in Aaron Lennon, Theo Walcott and Shaun Wright-Phillips. Becks added:
"The players have realised nothing is certain about being in squads. Every player
has to work hard to get the manager's attention. If I'm in it, then great. If
I'm not, it's good for the other players." |
