PM regrets leakage of Liberhan Commission report | The Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh, on Wednesday regretted the leakage of the enquiry report of the Liberhan Commission, which probed the circumstances leading to the demolition of the Babri Masjid in December 1992.
The Liberhan Commission, the one-man commission headed by Justice M S Liberhan,
probed into the circumstances leading to the demolition of the Babri Masjid and
took almost 17 years to hand over its report to the government. "Mujhe khed hai
(I regret it)," said Dr. Singh when asked about the leakage of the report. "It
happened when I was away. It should not have happened. We will investigate who
(was) responsible for it. I will discuss it with the Home Minister (P. Chidambaram)
and other dignitaries when I return to India," Dr. Singh told reporters in the
Willard Room of the Willard Intercontinental Hotel here this afternoon. The Liberhan
Commission report, which was tabled in both the Houses of Parliament has given
clean chit to the then Congress Government at the centre led by P V Narsimha Rao.
Absolving the Centre of any blame in the destruction of the Babri Masjid, the
Commission indicted the Kalyan Singh-led BJP Government of Uttar Pradesh. It aslso
said that inspirational support was given by top leaders of BJP like L K Advani,
Atal Behari Vajpayee and Murli Manohar Joshi to the state in carrying out its
design. The leakage of the report brought proceedings in parliament to a standstill
this week, with the BJP and other opposition parties demanding the introduction
of a breach of (parliamentary) privilege motion against the UPA Government and
the media house responsible for it before its formal tabling in the house. On
its part, the government submitted the commission's report and a 13-page Action
Taken Report (ATR), which was also rejected by the opposition as something done
in haste. "Paramhans Ramchadra Das, Ashok Singhal, Vinay Katiyar, Vishnu hari
Dalmiya, Vamdev, KS Sudarshan,, Lalji tandon, Kalraj Misra, Govindacharya and
others named in my report formed the complete cartel lead by Kalyan Singh and
supported by the icons of the Ayodhya Movement like L K Advani, MM Joshi and AB
Vajpayee," Justice Liberhan has said in the report. |
