No hand in leakage of Liberhan Commission report: Home Ministry

Union Home Ministry on Wednesday drew attention to a telecast made on a news channel and reiterated that the Ministry has absolutely no role in the leakage of the Liberhan Commission report on the Babri mosque demolition case. "Barkha Dutt, Group Editor of NDTV 24X7, categorically stated that "we will not reveal our sources, but we can say that the leak of the Liberhan Commission report did not come from the Home Ministry. We did not attribute the leak to anyone in the Home Ministry," a Home Ministry press release said. "This is an important admission and completely answers the baseless charge made by some leaders of the BJP (not all leaders), who alleged that the Liberhan Commission report was leaked by the Ministry of Home Affairs or the Home Minister," it added. Squarely blaming Union Home Minister P Chidambaram for the leak of the Liberhan Commission report, the Bharatiya Janata Party on Tuesday had demanded his resignation. "Chidambaram should own moral responsibility and resign before the debate. He cannot escape responsibility by merely calling the leak unfortunate," said Sushma Swaraj, senior BJP leader. Following the uproar, Chidambaram had finally tabled the enquiry report, along with Action Taken Report (ATR) in the Parliament. Liberhan Commission, the one-man commission headed by Justice MS Liberhan, probed into the circumstances leading to the demolition of the Babri Masjid on December 6, 1992. The probe panel, which took almost 17 years, recorded the statements of senior BJP leaders Lal Krishna Advani, Joshi and the then Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Kalyan Singh.
