Parliament adjourns till Monday over sugarcane price issue | Both houses of Parliament adjourned till Monday on the sugarcane pricing issue following opposition protests. After eminent journalist H K Dua took oath as Rajya Sabha member, the opposition rushed into
the Well of the House and forced an adjournment. Later, when the house was reconvened,
the opposition again raised the sugarcane pricing issue and demanded suspension
of Question Hour to discuss the issue. Rajya Sabha Chairman Hamid Ansari appealed
to the members to carry on the business of house, but opposition refused to budge
and forced an adjournment. The Lok Sabha was also adjourned over the same issue.
Thousands of sugarcane farmers gathered in the national capital on Thursday to
protest against the high sugarcane prices and the controversial move by the government
to implement the Sugarcane Control (Amendment) Order 2009 Ordinance. The Ordinance
has changed the sugarcane pricing policy, fixing a uniform Fair and Remunerative
Price (FRP), putting the burden on the states if they choose to pay more than
the FRP to farmers. Leaders of the House in the Lok Sabha, Pranab Mukherjee has
invited party leaders for a breakfast meeting on Monday to thrash out a viable
solution to the issue. |
