Parliament adjourned for the day over sugarcane price issue | The winter session of the parliament was adjourned for the day on Thursday due to opposition protests over sugarcane prices. Earlier today, farmers
from all parts of the country congregated in the national capital to stall proceedings
in parliament in protest against the high sugarcane prices. Tens of thousands
of farmers gathered at the Ramlila ground and marched to Parliament. Prominent
political leaders like Mulayam Singh Yadav, Raghuvansh Prasad and Ajit Singh addressed
them. As the winter session of the parliament began, Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP)
and Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) MPs shouted slogans demanding a change in the center's
sugarcane policy. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh later met Finance Minister Pranab
Mukherjee, Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar and Law Minister Veerappa Moily to
find a solution to the sugarcane price issue. Pawar gave an assurance to the farmers
that the government will soon find a way out. |
