Mamata demands President's rule in West Bengal | Union Railway Minister and Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee on Thursday demanded imposition of President's rule in West Bengal under Article 356 of the Constitution. Addressing an all-party meeting in the national Capital, Mamata said: "More than 300 people have been killed and it is not fair in a democratic set-up, which is why we want Article 356 against the atrocities." "The atrocities against Muslims, Schedule
Castes, Schedule Tribes and women are so high. They are killing people everyday.
The Government must act according to the constitutional provisions. If the State
cannot do anything, the State Government cannot keep mum," Mamata said. Meanwhile,
leader of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) Basudeb Acharia underplayed the
demand. "In 2006, the Left Front Government got the mandate to rule, to run the
Government for six years. The elections are due in 2011, she (Mamata) is asking
for the President's rule today. She has been asking for the imposition of Article
356 on the West Bengal Government for several years," Acharia said. |
