Woman killed following political clashes in West Bengal | A woman died here on Wednesday amidst sporadic clashes between activists of the Communist party and the Trinamool Congress (TMC). 73-year-old Saifunnisa
Bibi, a resident of Khanakul village in Hooghly district, was reportedly beaten
up by TMC activists on Monday. She died in a hospital on Wednesday. "Some people
broke into our house and attacked us. After that they caught hold of her (Saifunnisa
Bibi) and beat her up. They were supporters of Trinamool Congress. They had only
sticks with them. They beat her with sticks on her legs and broke her bones. We
admitted her immediately to Arambagh hospital but then brought her here where
she was declared dead," said Zahanara Begum, daughter-in-law of Saifunnisa Bibi.
TMC, however, denied any party worker's hand in Bibi's death. "As per the medical
death certificate, it is a normal death. Now we are waiting here, let's see,"
said Madan Mitra, TMC General Secretary. However, Shyamal Chakrabarty, a leader
of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), who visited the hospital, held the
TMC responsible for the attack. "No matter whatever Madan Mitra says, he is an
astrologer like Mamata Banerjee as she said from Delhi that CPI(M) had blocked
the Rajdhani express. He (Madan Mitra) is speaking in a similar way. Everything
will be clear once the post-mortem report comes," said Chakrabarty. |
