New Af-Pak policy to focus on Pak as key in fight against terror |
US President Barack Obama is reportedly expected to announce a new
policy for Afghanistan and Pakistan soon, which is expected to focus on Pakistan
as a key player in the fight against extremists. According to reports, Obama recently
held a Situation Room meeting with his national security team on Pakistan and
Afghanistan to finalize the 'right strategy' for the region. The meeting was attended
by US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Defence Secretary Robert Gates, National
Security Advisor General (retired) James Jones, Deputy NSA Tom Donilon, Assistant
to the President for Counterterrorism and Homeland Security John Brennan and White
House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel. While, Vice President, Joe Biden, who is in
Europe, joined the meeting through video-conference, The Dawn reports. Earlier,
President Obama used to invite US Ambassadors to Afghanistan and Pakistan to attend
the meeting, but this time around they were missing from the contingent. Meanwhile,
Secretary Clinton would be leaving for Pakistan soon for an official visit, where
she is expected to brief Pakistani leaders on the new strategy as well. |
