England fast bowler Onions confident of proving his worth |
Ahead of the tour of South Africa, England fast
bowler Graham Onions has said that he is all charged up to be the bowling spearhead.
Onions has taken 20 wickets in the five Tests that he has played, and has also
displayed a potent ability to remove top-order players in international cricket.
"I am 27, some people ask me whether I wish I was 20 again, but I don't. I have
worked hard, had a lot of ups and downs and now I am playing for England. I am
absolutely loving the journey so far, and long may it continue," The Independent
quoted Onions, as saying. "I would like to think, I will not change as a person
whether I go on to play 100 Tests or 10. I will definitely play each game as though
it's my last and that is the best way to do it. I want to play for England and
make a difference," he added. The 27-year-old, who was part of the England team
that defeated Australia in the Ashes series, also said that playing in the international
arena has boosted his confidence level. He further said that he has confidence
in his ability to bowl full and straight from the off, and he would ensure that
South Africa's top order would face a similar challenge as the Australians did
against him. "In Test cricket I have always picked up a wicket quite early, even
if I have gone for 20-odd in my first three overs. I have been going for runs,
but I have always felt that I can get better and that I am picking up wickets,
which is a great feeling," Onions said. "If you feel good about yourself, you
have a smile on your face, then you are going to be pretty positive. I used to
be a bit of a sulker and get down quite easily, but now I reflect on the fact
I love doing this job," he added. |
