India and Japan to increase collaboration in energy sector |
Environment and Forest Minister Jairam
Ramesh on Monday said that India and Japan have decided to enhance collaboration
in the energy sector. Talking to reporters after a meeting with his Japanese counterpart
Sakihito Ozawa, Ramesh said Japan has assured full support to India particularly
in the energy sector besides setting up of the IIT in Hyderabad . " Japan is giving
its full support to India in the making of a new IIT in Hyderabad . We talked
about climate change technology and the possibility of collaboration between India
and Japan in this sphere. Private companies like Toshiba have been in India for
quite some years, but we discussed if there can be further collaboration especially
in the field of energy. And, I am happy that the Japan Government has assured
India of its full support," said Ramesh. Ramesh also said that the two countries
are trying to work together for the Copenhagen summit, to be held in the Danish
capital, in December this year. "We talked about how Japan and India could work
together in regard to the Copenhagen talks. We also talked about the visit of
the Japanese Prime Minister to India next year," he added. The Japanese Government
is aiming to play a bigger negotiating role in UN-backed Copenhagen talks in December
for a new agreement on reducing emissions to replace the Kyoto Protocol. The talks
have run into deadlock on issues such as sharing out curbs on greenhouse gases
among rich and poor nations, and raising funds to help developing countries tackle
global warming. |
