‘Alert’ Pentagon closely monitoring situation in Pak |
The Pentagon has said that is it keeping a close watch on Pakistan ’s current
situation, where the recent spate of terror attacks, particularly on security
installations, has raised questions over Islamabad’s efforts to weed out extremism
from the country’s soil. “ U.S. officials are alert to the recent violence in
Pakistan and are watching the situation closely,” The Nation quoted Pentagon spokesman
Bryan Whitman, as saying. The Pentagon has also decided to ramp up the delivery
of military equipments to the Pakistan Army to fight militants, officials said.
This direct military aid from the Pentagon would come on top of the equipment
that Pakistan receives through normal foreign military sales overseen by the US
State Department, officials added. The recent audacious terror attacks in Pakistan
have increased problems for Washington , which is trying hard to ally the ‘anti-America’
feeling that persists in the troubled nation with President Barack Obama approving
the Kerry-Lugar bill, which would offer 7.5 billion dollars to Islamabad as non-military
aid over the next five years. Thursday’s ‘chained’ militant attacks in Lahore
on three Pakistani security agency installations in, the Federal Investigation
Agency headquarters, the Manawan Police Training Academy and the Elite Police
Training Academy has once again raised international apprehensions regarding the
safety of the country’s nuclear establishments. |
