Taliban offering stiff resistance to Pak troops in South Waziristan |
The Pakistan Army is facing stiff resistance from the Taliban as it advanced
deeper into their stronghold in South Waziristan following the government’s nod
for an all out offensive in the region. According to reports, the extremists were
using ‘heavy weapons’ against the advancing security personnel, who are moving
in from three different directions. The forces met solid resistance from the militants
within hours after the operation started according to a senior military official,
The Telegraph reported. About 28,000 soldiers are taking part in the offensive
aimed at rooting out about the 10,000 strong militant army. About 500 special
commandos arrived in the region on Friday. Earlier, Pakistan Army chief General
Ashfaq Kayani, briefed the government and various political leaders about he impending
terror threat and the planned military operation. “The national consensus is reaffirmed
to establish and maintain the writ of the state to weed out these elements,” a
statement released by the Prime Minister’s office, after the meeting, said. The
Pakistan Air Force (PAF) is also taking part in the operation and has destroyed
many militant hideouts in the recent past. Large numbers of people have left the
region fearing an intense battle between the military and the extremists. Hordes
of people have started arriving in Peshawar , Bannu and North Waziristan According
to the United Nations (UN) more than 80,000 civilians have already fled from South
Waziristan in anticipation of the offensive. |
