New broadcasting and relay transmitters to come up in remote areas of J-K

      Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni on Tuesday announced that a high power television transmitters (HPTs) will be set up in the border regions of Jammu and Kashmir. She also said that low power FM (frequency modulated) radio transmitters (LPTs) will be set up in several areas to improve the quality of TV and radio transmission and increasing the broadcast coverage in the State. Addressing a three-day All India Editors' Conference in Srinagar, Soni said: "I would particularly like to mention in this context setting up of high power TV transmitters in border areas and low power FM transmitters in uncovered areas of Jammu and Kashmir." "A provision of Rs. 100 crores has also been made for this purpose in the current financial year," Soni added. Soni further informed that under this proposed scheme, three HPTs are to be set up at Sirpath, Jasrota Top and Khalsar in Kashmir, while one LPT for FM radio programmes would come up at Naushera. She also informed that one TV transmitter for Doordarshan-1 (DD-1) and Doordarshan-News (DD-News) will be set up at Rajouri and said that a new Doordarshan Studio at Leh is expected to be completed and commissioned during 2010 The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has also proposed to open up more towns for private FM channels with special incentives for border areas under the new FM Phase-III policy, which is on the anvil.
