India test-fires Prithvi-II ballistic missile | India on Thursday successfully test-fired surface-to-surface Prithvi-II ballistic missile from the Integrated Test Range (ITR) in Chandipur of Balasore district off Odisha coast. The missile was blasted off from the launch complex number three in the ITR at 9.07 a.m. by personnel of the Strategic Force Command
(SFC) as part of a regular training exercise.
Prithvi-II, first indigenously developed strategic missile by the Defence Research Development Organisation (DRDO), is already a part of the Indian armed forces. The DRDO has developed three Prithvi
variants: Prithvi-I for the Army; Prithvi-II for the Indian Air Force; and the
Dhanush for the Navy. All the three have been inducted into service.
The single-stage, liquid-propelled, 9 meter long and 1 meter diameter missile is equipped with an
advanced inertial navigation, control and guidance system and can carry a payload
of 500-1,000 kg to a distance of 350 km. The missile has been successfully flight
tested in the past on a number of times as part of the training exercise.
