Need to enhance preparedness of armed forces, says Antony

      Defence Minister AK Antony on Monday underlined the need to enhance the overall preparedness of the armed forces by providing them with modern arms, ammunitions and other equipment. Speaking on the sidelines of the inauguration of the 265th Foundation Day ceremony of Defence Accounts Department here, Antony said: “It has been our endeavour and indeed top priority to enhance the overall preparedness by providing modern arms, ammunitions and other equipments to our armed forces.” He further assured adequate monetary aid to accomplish the objective.

"We have focused our efforts to provide adequate budgetary resources to achieve this objective. The task of utilising the funds allotted optimally and with all honesty and transparency has to be a collective endeavour," he added. Speaking on the issue of financial irregularities, Antony said the Ministry has tried to make optimum utilisation of the money allotted for the development and modernisation of the armed forces. "In the last few years we have been able to ensure total utilisation of funds allotted. This trend might continue in the years to come," Antony stated.

Antony also said that the process of putting checks and balances in organisations in his Ministry has also started, and the financial powers of organisation heads, the three Services chiefs and the DRDO have been increased recently. India is the globe's top weapons importer and plans to spend over 40 billion US dollars in defence this year.
