CWC meets to take stock of present political scenario, counter FDI opposition

A meeting of the Congress Working Committee (CWC) is presently on at party chief Sonia Gandhi's official 10, Janpath residence here on Tuesday to take stock of the present situation and chalk out the strategy ahead in the backdrop of Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress (TMC) pulling out of the ruling UPA coalition. Several top brass of the Congress party are present in the CWC meeting, which is party's highest decision-making body. The CWC, which is chaired by Sonia Gandhi, is also expected to discuss how to complete its term and reach 2014 with least dissonance. The CWC includes chief ministers of Congress-ruled states, general secretaries and special invitees. The TMC, the biggest partner of the Congress-led UPA Government, pulled out over big-ticket economic reforms, reducing coalition to a minority government and bringing even more instability to an already volatile political landscape. The government took some decisions last week, including the hike in diesel price, cap the supply of subsidised LPG cylinders to six per household and approving 51 percent Foreign Direct Investment or FDI in multi-brand retail. Trinamool Congress, which has 19 members in the Lok Sabha, withdrew support to the UPA Government and pulled out its six ministers from the government on September 21 after being disappointed with the announcement government's new reforms.
