Security stepped up in Guwahati after ULFA threats | Security arrangements have been stepped up across the Guwahati after Intelligence Agencies recently warned the city police about possible strikes by the ULFA faction opposed to talks.
According to reports, the outfit is trying to ferry in large quantity of explosives in two vans to strike Guwahati. Security forces have been put on high alert and vehicles are being thoroughly frisked to avoid any untoward incident. The entry
and exit routes to Guwahati have been sealed. Interacting with reporters here,
Senior Superintendent of Police , Assam , A.P. Tiwari, said that they won’t allow
ULFA to target Guwahati. “The intelligence agencies have given us inputs that
ULFA could use two Maruti vans to come to Guwahati. But we are trying our best
to prevent their arrival in this region. As per the information, they have got
some Maruti vans in Meghalaya and whatever explosives and other related things,
they have done everything in Meghalaya. We have to verify and check everything
to thwart any untoward incident. We are now working on it,” he said. People across
the state want ULFA chief Paresh Baruah to end violence and come for peace talks.
Aruna Kalita, one of the residents, said, “For the past few months, there was
peace in Assam . We were not living in any kind of fear until recently ULFA threatened
the people.” “ULFA should understand the sentiments of common people. If they
create problems, then it will hamper development. In such a situation government
should take better steps regarding security of the people,” said Anupam, another
resident. Intelligence reports reveal that Baruah has recruited 1000 new cadres
who are being trained by Manipur based People’s Liberation Army. The outfit has
also stepped up extortion activities in Upper Assam . Though Baruah’s fund flows
have largely reduced, but he is still receiving moral and logistic support from
anti India forces. A Blast in Guwahati on September 8, grenade attacks at Bongaigaon
and Tinsukia on September 11 and September 6 respectively and an ambush in Goalpara
on July 31 indicate that ULFA hardliners are trying hard to create instability
across the state. |
