Chinese stores suspend sales of Japanese books amid Senkaku Islands stand-off

Stores in China have suspended sales of Japanese books amid the ongoing territorial dispute over the Senkaku Islands in the East China Sea. Wangfujing Bookstore, a long-established shop in the popular Wangfujing shopping district, removed Chinese versions of popular Japanese novels. It also stopped marketing Japanese language books and travel guides on the country, the Japan Times reports. "We don't sell Japanese books," the report quoted a shop clerk, as saying. "I don't know the reason why very well, but perhaps it is because China-Japan relations are not good," the shopkeeper added. According to informed sources, bookshops in the city started removing Japanese books after municipal authorities began partially regulating books related to the country. The move came as Beijing and Tokyo's relations deteriorated sharply after Japan nationalized three of the disputed islands, known as the Diaoyu in China and Tiaoyutai in Taiwan, on September 11.
