the paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and local police cornered
the rebels, who were taking bath in a river in one of the interior regions in
the district. In the ensuing encounter, four to five ultras were reportedly killed.
The Superintendent of Police of Latehar, Kranti Kumar, said police recovered three
assault rifles, 33 bullets, rupees 2,500 and some other materials from spot. “We
got information that around 20 to 25 Maoists were bathing. We set a team consisting
of our district police and the CRPF ( India ’s paramilitary Central Reserve Police
Force) and rushed to the spot. Maoists ran away after we opened fire. We have
recovered three rifles and 33 cartridges during this operation,” Kumar said. Maoists
have also significantly increased their presence in tribal and rural regions in
Chhattisgarh, Bihar, West Bengal and Odisha. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has
