World-renowned cartoonist Bruce Petty a 'political cartoonist' | Kerala is the home to scores of Indian cartoonists. It played host to internationally renowned cartoonist Bruce Petty on Friday. Petty
conducted a workshop on Animation of Cartoons and Caricatures at Thiruvananthapuram. The
workshop was organised in the memory of former Kerala Chief Minister C Achutha Menon. Leading
political cartoonist of Indian Express, EP Unny moderated the session. Unny described Petty
as a cartoonist who can bridge the gap between animated cartoons and cartoons
or caricatures appearing in print. “Animation is something that interests all
our children. When they talk about cartoons, the new generation and young kids,
it’s actually television animation that they see, not the newspaper cartoons.
So, here is a person who can bridge the gap between the moving image, which they
think is a cartoon, and printed image of the cartoon that my generations used
to see on newspaper,” said Unny. Petty, born in Australia in 1929, is also a graphic
social scientist and a travel writer. Unny said Petty is the first cartoonist
to have won Oscar for his animation cartoons. “It is probably, the only cartoonist,
who has done animation and won an Oscar for animation in 1977 and continues to
be an active political cartoonist, very much with the news, very much with politics,
very much with in the way the world is changing. Usually you find animators doing
very artistic kind of work and the cartoonist is doing more news related and news
driven work. He is a person, who has done both,” added Unny. Petty, 83, won the
Academy Award for Animation in 1977 and continues to make animated films. The
award winning cartoons caricatured by Petty were exhibited at this workshop. Petty
will visit to Delhi on Saturday.
